Curated by Austria Ulloa

With the support of The Latin American Art Triennial at The Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture in New York City.

Curatorial Statement:

Roots and Rebirth brings together the work of Dominican women artists who are strongly connected to their history and traditions while offering a fresh vision and perspective to the culture. This exhibition emphasizes how their creative processes are rooted in cultural heritage while embracing new ideas, reflecting the evolving identity of Dominican women in contemporary art.

Utilizing a range of mediums, the artists explore themes of memory, identity, and transformation, drawing inspiration from Dominican folklore, Afro-Caribbean spirituality, and the experiences of migration and diaspora. These cultural roots are continually reinterpreted through personal stories and a global outlook, producing art that honors the past while envisioning new possibilities for the future.

Roots and Rebirth honors the power of sharing their individual stories. It acknowledges the weight of history while highlighting the strength required to reshape it. Here, “rebirth" is not about leaving the past behind but about transforming it, developing new ways of expressing and expanding what it means to be a Dominican woman today. The pieces in this exhibition honor the complexity of identity, illustrating how these artists remain deeply rooted in their heritage while embracing new influences and transformations.

This exhibition encourages viewers to reflect on how roots can anchor and inspire growth. It invites us to recognize how tradition and innovation coexist and to appreciate the resilience involved in maintaining cultural ties while exploring new directions. This way, Roots and Rebirth celebrates the constant cycle of creativity, renewal, and discovery.
